Must Visit Destination
Gullfoss Waterfall stands as a breathtaking spectacle, cascading down 32 meters into the Hvítá river canyon in two magnificent stages. As one of Iceland’s most majestic waterfalls, Gullfoss captivates visitors with its awe-inspiring beauty. The waterfall takes on a magical allure, especially on sunny days, when the mist creates vibrant rainbows, adorning Gullfoss with a stunning crown.
The source of the Hvíta River lies at the Langjökull glacier, contributing to the waterfall’s flow. While the water diminishes in winter, Gullfoss remains an impressive sight, even as the surroundings transform into a winter wonderland. However, caution is advised during winter visits, as the walking path can become slippery from the frozen mist emanating from the falls.
Gullfoss is a pivotal stop on the famed Golden Circle, a popular one-day road trip from Reykjavik that includes other iconic destinations like Þingvellir National Park and the Geysir area. The Golden Circle showcases the diverse natural wonders that Iceland has to offer, making it a must-visit for those seeking a comprehensive Icelandic experience.
Delving into Gullfoss’s rich history unveils the remarkable story of Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the first Icelandic activist. In the early 20th century, plans were seriously considered to dam the canyon and build a hydroelectric power station, posing a threat to the waterfall’s existence. Sigríður Tómasdóttir, the daughter of the landowner at Gullfoss, played a pivotal role in preventing this environmental disruption.
Facing adversity, Sigríður undertook extraordinary efforts to preserve Gullfoss. She walked over 100 kilometers from her home at the Brattholt farm, close to Gullfoss, to secure legal representation. With determination, she took her father to court, challenging the contract he had signed allowing the construction of the power station. Her courageous stand included a threat to throw herself into the waterfall if the project proceeded.
Thanks to Sigríður Tómasdóttir’s relentless efforts, Gullfoss remains untouched by industrial development. The Icelandic State now owns and protects the waterfall. A rock near Gullfoss stands as a poignant memorial to Sigríður Tómasdóttir, featuring a metal plate with her likeness, created by the Icelandic sculptor Ríkhaður Jónsson.
Gullfoss is a highlight in many self-drive itineraries and is prominently featured in all Golden Circle day tours. For those with limited time, Gullfoss is a must-see destination, encapsulating the natural beauty and historical significance that defines Iceland’s allure. Immerse yourself in the majesty of Gullfoss, where nature, history, and activism converge to create an unforgettable experience.
