Your first destination on the tour is Þingvellir National Park, where you’ll have the opportunity to witness the magnificence of Thingvellir Lake, the second largest in Iceland, and stroll along the rift between the North American and Euro-Asian tectonic plates. This site is renowned for being the birthplace of Althing, the world’s first parliament, established in 930 AD, and the source of the park’s name “Þingvellir” meaning “Fields of the Parliament.” If time permits, your guide will take you to the breathtaking Öxarárfoss Waterfall, which flows into the rift and blends with Thingvellir Lake.
The next stop is the Haukdalur/ Geysir geothermal area, one of the most geologically active regions in Iceland. Here, you’ll find the most active geyser in Iceland, Strokkur, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes and sends a jet of hot water soaring up to 20 to 30 meters (65 to 98 feet) into the air. In addition to Strokkur, the area is also home to Little Geysir, nicknamed “the small one,” which resembles a boiling cauldron, as well as about 20 other inactive geysers that could erupt at any moment. But be careful not to get too close, as the water temperature reaches a scalding 100°C (212°F).
Last, but not least, we head to the magnificent Gullfoss waterfall, Iceland’s second-largest waterfall. It’s just a 5-minute walk from the parking lot to the waterfall’s viewpoint. During the summer months, for those who enjoy hiking, we can escort you to the side of the waterfall, where you’ll have the chance to experience the thundering vibration and the refreshing mist from the cascading water.
Kerið crater is a volcanic crater located in southern Iceland, known for its striking beauty and unique geological features. This volcanic crater is part of Iceland’s Western Volcanic Zone and is estimated to be around 3,000 years old. What sets Kerið apart is its picturesque appearance and its vibrant colors. The crater is approximately 55 meters deep and 270 meters wide, with a stunning lake at the bottom that is filled with bright blue-green water. The contrast between the red volcanic rock walls, the lush green vegetation, and the azure-colored lake creates a breathtaking sight. Visitors to Kerið can explore the rim of the crater, taking in panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes and the tranquil lake below. A pathway allows visitors to walk around the rim, providing different vantage points to admire the crater’s unique features.
After your breakfast, we gather and head to the South Coast, which is known for its waterfalls and Black Sand Beach. Today’s highlights include Seljalandsfoss, Skogafoss, Gljufrabui, Black Sand Beach, and Dyrholaey Bridge.
Seljalandsfoss waterfall is a stunning natural wonder located on the South Coast of Iceland. This breathtaking waterfall drops 60 meters (197 feet) into a serene pool below and can be viewed from a unique angle by taking a path that goes behind the waterfall. This experience is a must-see for anyone traveling to Iceland and looking to explore the country’s natural beauty.
Skógafoss is a magnificent waterfall located on the south coast of Iceland, just a short drive from the town of Skógar. With a drop of 60 meters and a width of 25 meters, it is one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Iceland. Visitors can walk right up to the waterfall and feel the mist from the water on their faces. For those who want a better view, there is a staircase that leads to the top of the waterfall where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is one of the most stunning and unique natural wonders of Iceland. The black sand beach is famous for its dramatic basalt columns, towering cliffs, and powerful waves that crash onto the shore. It is located near the village of Vík í Mýrdal, and it’s a popular destination for visitors to Iceland. The basalt columns were formed by lava flows that cooled quickly and created hexagonal structures. The beach is also home to a beautiful cave, called Hálsanefshellir, which can be explored during low tide. Visitors can take a walk along the beach, marvel at the impressive cliffs, and enjoy the view of the nearby Dyrhólaey peninsula.
Vík is a charming village located on the southern coast of Iceland, known for its stunning natural surroundings and picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean. With a population of around 300, Vík is the southernmost village in Iceland, and it offers a unique experience for visitors seeking a tranquil getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. The village is surrounded by beautiful mountains, black sand beaches, and unique rock formations, making it a perfect destination for nature lovers and photographers. In addition, Vík is home to several restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops where visitors can taste local cuisine and purchase authentic Icelandic souvenirs. This is a must-visit stop when you are in the South of Iceland.
Following dinner, the guide will brief you about the northern lights forecast, and you will be able to see the lights from your accommodation (if weather permits).
A 3-star hotel with breakfast near the South Coast will be included in the price you pay.
On our final day, we will explore the Ice Cave at Jokulsarlon and Diamond Beach, as well as the Fjadrargljufur Canyon and Skaftafell natural reserve. We’ll take a journey to an ice cave, which is something special.
The Ice Cave experience in Iceland offers a unique opportunity to explore the magical world inside a glacier. These natural wonders are formed by meltwater creating intricate tunnels and chambers within the ice. Visitors can venture inside these stunning ice formations and witness the mesmerizing blue hues that result from the compression of ancient ice. Ice Cave tours are typically guided and provide a safe and unforgettable adventure, allowing participants to marvel at the captivating ice formations and learn about the glacier’s fascinating history and formation. This immersive experience offers a glimpse into the extraordinary beauty and power of Iceland’s glaciers, making it a highlight for travelers seeking a one-of-a-kind experience in this breathtaking country.
Jökulsárlón is a huge glacial lagoon (and Iceland’s deepest lake) at the foot of the Vatnajökull glacier. The glacier melts as it approaches the lowlands, forming a lagoon. The lagoon is loaded with enormous icebergs that float gently away from the glacier and towards the ocean. The icebergs vary greatly in size and shape. The largest ones can grow to be 20 to 30 meters long. The lagoon’s look varies all the time as the glacier “calves” and new icebergs enter it.
We next travel to Black Sand Beach, also known as Diamond Beach, where icebergs are swept ashore by the waves. These two attractions are among Iceland’s most photographed natural wonders. Jökulsarlon Glacier Lagoon has acquired the moniker “Iceland’s Crown Jewel.” The Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach have become internationally famous after appearing in Hollywood films such as James Bond, Batman Begins, and Tomb Raider.
We’ll also visit the canyon of Fjadrargljufur today. It is as gorgeous as it is difficult to pronounce. This spectacular canyon, located in the south, is one of Iceland’s most valuable treasures. Fjadrargljufur, which is 100 meters deep and 2 kilometers long, was formed 2 million years ago at the conclusion of the last Ice Age. Although the canyon is ancient, its fame is rather young.
Lastly, we visit Skaftafell, a natural reserve in Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park in the southeast. It is an oasis of this country’s numerous landscapes and features, and it was formerly designated as a national park in its own right.
We then return to Reykjavik and say our goodbyes.
