Askja Volcano Tour from Akureyri

Welcome to a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Iceland’s otherworldly landscapes. This tour takes you on a journey through some of the country’s most unique and breathtaking sites. From the Hrossaborg crater in the Mývatn area, to the green oasis of Herðubreiðalindir, and the hiding place of Iceland’s most famous outlaw, Fjalla-Eyvindur, you will witness the beauty of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes.

But the tour doesn’t stop there. You will then travel to Askja, crossing through moon-like landscapes that NASA used to train astronauts for the Apollo moon landings. You will visit Vikraborgir craters and trek to Askja lake and Viti, a smaller lake within a crater. For the more adventurous, there’s the option to bathe in the warm waters of the Víti crater.

And to top off this incredible journey, you will explore Drekagil, the Canyon of the Dragons, which boasts some of the most unique and beautiful rock formations in Iceland. So buckle up and get ready for an unforgettable experience through Iceland’s natural beauty.

Along the green oasis

We depart from Akureyri following route number 1 through Mývatn area to Hrossaborg crater before taking the mountain road F88 Crossing Rivers & trailing gravel trails to Herðubreiðalindir – a beautiful green oasis situated in the midst of a barren volcanic landscape.

Sagas and Moon on Earth

This is also the place where Fjalla-Eyvindur – Iceland´s most famous outlaw – took shelter in the winter of 1774-1775. From Herðubreiðalindir we continue our journey to Askja, crossing through the lunar-like landscapes where NASA trained their astronauts in preparation for the Apollo moon landings.

Vikraborgir Craters

Upon arrival at Askja, we park at the Vikraborgir craters which erupted in 1961. From there we walk the trail (2.4 km) to Askja lake and Viti, a smaller lake that has formed inside a crater.Visiting Askja is an amazing and unforgettable experience. It is quite simply one of the most breathtaking sights in the whole of Iceland.

Canyon of Dragons

In the mountains that surround Askja lies Drekagil – the Canyon of the Dragons, and that´s where we head to next. Drekagil contains some strange yet intriguingly beautiful rock formations.

Return to Akureyri

After Drekagil we drive back to Akureyri.

You can be picked up from most hotels in Akureyri town, as well as the Airport and Harbour. Remember to choose a pick-up location during the booking process.

What if my cruise is late, will I miss the tour?

If you booked a tour from the port, your tour is customized only for cruise ship passengers so your guide will wait for you.

How will I find the guide at the port?

The guide will be waiting for you at the port with a Star Travel sign.

Why is the tour price different today from the last time I checked?

What if my cruise can’t dock?

You will receive a full refund if your cruise cannot dock.

What happens with my booking if you cancel the tour?

If we cancel the tour due to bad weather, you will receive an email and an offer to reschedule. If rescheduling does not work, we will refund the full refund.
