You will experience the splendor of Hvalfjörur on this day trip by kayaking around the shores of Hvammsvk and seeing the well-known Icelandic hot springs.
The first half of the journey will be spent kayaking and enjoying the Hvalfjördur fjord’s surroundings. You’ll be driven to Hvammsvk Hot Springs once you return to the shore. This is when the process of deep relaxation and soaking in the hot springs will begin. The journey back to Reykjavik will wrap up your day.
Your journey will begin in Reykjavik, from which point you’ll travel to Hvalfjörur’s Hvammsvk Bay. Please be aware that you can sign up for the tour directly from Hvammsvk Bay.
Once you arrive, you’ll be outfitted with kayaking gear and given safety and paddling instructions to get you ready for the swim. You’ll bring your kayaks to the beach when everyone is prepared, and you’ll begin paddling along the Hvammsvk shore.
Hvalfjordur is well-known for its breathtaking scenery, which may be enjoyed by taking a few hiking paths and stopping at the designated viewpoints. This location is acclaimed for both its natural beauty and intriguing past. The fjord played a significant role in earlier times as the center of trade. It also gained significance when the British established numerous military bases in Iceland during World War II. During this time, a naval base was built in Hvammsvk to guard Iceland’s western coast and the commerce lanes to North America. Hvammsvik served as a base for anti-submarine patrols and guarded convoys entering and leaving Iceland.
The British established a few buildings in the region throughout the conflict, including a hospital, radio station, fuel depot, and barracks. Even if there isn’t much of these structures surviving today to provide evidence of Hvammsvk’s significance in Iceland’s defense, the history is still fresh in the memories of the inhabitants.
Hvalfjörur is also known as “Whale Fjord,” however there is little possibility of seeing a whale there. However, you may encounter seals, Arctic terns, guillemots, or eider ducks instead.
After paddling for about 1.5 hours, you’ll arrive at land and be driven to Hvammsvk Hot Springs. There are eight hot pools there, with temperatures ranging from 37°C to 40°C. Since the hot springs are near the Atlantic Ocean, the tides affect their temperature and level. There is a sauna, a bar, and a restaurant at the location. You get one and a half hours to unwind and cool off at the hot springs before returning to Reykjavik.
