Embark on an unforgettable hiking tour to the Litli Hrútur volcanic eruption site and witness the incredible land transformation happening before your very eyes. Departing from Reykjavík city, Iceland in the afternoon or evening, this tour takes you directly to the captivating Litli Hrútur volcano area in Reykjanes Area, offering a chance to explore the remnants of the eruption that took place on July 10, 2023. The afternoon or evening departure ensures you get straight to the action. After a prompt downtown pickup, we embark on a drive through the otherworldly landscapes of the Reykjanes peninsula.
Please be aware that while our tour to the area is still available, we want to set the right expectations that there will be no live eruption to witness during the visit. However, you will still have the opportunity to explore the unique geological features and natural beauty of the surrounding Reykjanes Geopark.
We will arrange to meet you at your selected hotel or the designated bus stop in Reykjavik at approximately 9 am.
During our journey to Litli-Hrútur, the location of the volcano, we will pass through a highly volcanic area. This region showcases thousand-year-old lava fields that have completely covered the entire Reykjanes peninsula.
Once we arrive at the parking lot, our hike to the volcano will commence. Our path will lead us to the newly formed lava fields, providing us with the remarkable opportunity to witness a genuine erupting volcano.
We will take a 22km hike (8-10 hours) to the newest volcano eruption site – Litli-Hrútur, AKA the Little Ram.
This hike is rated as DIFFICULT – please use your best judgment before booking. Children under 14 are not permitted on this tour at this time.
Wearing proper hiking footwear and packing plenty of food and water will be required to attend this tour. If you arrive unprepared at the pickup point, no refund will be permitted.
Please note, we cannot guarantee an active eruption, and we might modify the route for the hike if snow or other weather conditions have an impact on our usual route. If there is snowfall or any change in eruption status, the route may change in difficulty and length. If the volcano is actively erupting, nothing compares to the majesty of an erupting volcano. Flaming craters and fissures, gleaming rivers of molten rock, and a glowing field of lava make the time you spend here unforgettable.
If there is a major eruption, there may be age restrictions in place for the safety of small children. If you are unsure, please contact us before booking. We are happy to answer any questions.
Litli Hrútur in the picturesque Reykjanes Peninsula of Iceland. The eruption site is situated between the stunning Fagradalsfjall and Keilir mountains, attracting the attention of nature enthusiasts and scientists alike. As of 4:40 pm on July 10, a significant event unfolded, igniting excitement and caution among observers.
Initial reports indicate that the eruption is relatively minor and, for the time being, not releasing any ash into the atmosphere. The volcanic activity has formed a 200-meter-long fissure extending in a northeast-southwest direction on the eastern and northeastern slopes of Litli Hrútur. Spectacular scenes of lava fountains have been observed as molten rock gushes from the fissure. The current eruption is contained within a small depression, with lava flowing southward.
The tour cost is 100% refundable if canceled more than 24 hours before departure.
A cancellation fee of 100% if canceled 1 day or less before departure.
