Embark on our Private Blue Lagoon with Reykjanes Tour at the start of your Iceland journey, and venture to the Reykjanes Peninsula where lava once flowed freely in the 1800s. It’s among Iceland’s most active volcanic regions, with the most recent eruptions at Fagradalsfjall in 2022 and Litli Hrutur in 2023.
As we travel around the peninsula, you will first come across ‘The Bridge Between Continents’, which crosses the dividing plates of North America and Eurasia. Iceland is the only place in the Mid-Atlantic ridge that rises above sea level and allows you to touch both continents. The ground beneath the bridge is divided from North to South. You will be able to stroll around and above the site at this amazing geological location.
Following the Bridge, you will see the Reykjanes Lighthouse and the stunning coastal cliffs. The original lighthouse Valanukur was built in 1878 but was rebuilt in 1907 due to unstable cliff faces. The cliffs were formed from lava flows in the 1800s and continue to erode with the power of the ocean.
The Gunnuhver Hot Springs is a short drive away from the lighthouse. You will be able to explore one of Iceland’s largest springs, a selection of the best mud pools and fumaroles, and learn about the haunted story of Gunnuhver. This geothermal site is one of the best in Iceland, it also has the remains of the early community where people used geothermal energy in its raw form to cook, bathe, and stay warm.
We’ll visit the Brimketill rock pools last, where lava has been eroded to form two huge pools. Bathing in these pools is not possible because the Atlantic is normally very strong, and the crashing waves in the area can get you a little wet. It’s a spectacular sight to witness in the windy weather, you can see along the coast as the lava meets the water, and if you’re lucky, you might see seals swimming through the kelps.
Following an exciting morning, we stop for lunch at a family-owned restaurant in Grindavik or the Lava restaurant in the Blue Lagoon, where you’ll be able to select from a variety of Icelandic local dishes ranging from soups to sandwiches to fish meals.
* Note that lunch is not included in the tour price.
The world-famous Blue Lagoon is located on the other side of Grindavik, we will make sure to end the day with a nice, relaxing bath in its mysterious waters. You will have the opportunity to apply a silica face mask and benefit from its healing effects while sipping on a refreshing drink from the swim-up bar. You also have the option to upgrade your Blue Lagoon experience to the Premium package, which includes the use of a bathrobe, additional face masks of your choice, and a glass of sparkling wine if dining at the Lava restaurant, or a Retreat Luxury Spa for a complete, full 5-hour experience of this Icelandic national wonder.
