The first stop of the day is Þingvellir National Park, where you will have a chance to see Thingvellir lake, the second biggest in Iceland, and walk in a rift where North American and Euro-Asian tectonic plates meet.
It is also known as the site of Althing, the first parliament in the world that was established year 930 AD. That’s actually where the name of the park Þingvellir (e. Fields of the Parliament) originates from. If you are not in any rush our guide will walk with you over to the Öxarárfoss Waterfall which falls into the rift and merges with Thingvellir lake.
We’ll take a 20-minute stroll around the park to see the 9000-year-old lava field’s stunning mid-Atlantic ridge where it separates apart. You can probably see an eruption every 5 to 7 minutes as you get closer to Haukadalur, which is home to the enormous Strokkur geyser. We’ll stop here to take in one of nature’s greatest displays as we explore the vibrant hot springs, which shoot scorching hot water into the air at heights of about 25 to 30 meters.
The beautiful Gullfoss waterfall, a two-tiered plunge into the pure white Hvita river with its potent glacier run-off waters, will be our next stop. Then, at the start of the Kjölur inner mountain road—famous for being the second-longest route across the Icelandic Highlands—we are traveling north. Even the Icelandic sagas refer to this route, which has existed since the earliest Icelandic settlements. We’re here to visit Langjökull, the second-largest glacier in the nation.
During the summer, we’ll drive into the glacier; depending on the weather, snowmobile activities happen either on or near to the glacier in the winter. If you choose the snowmobile option, you have an additional hour (or more, upon request) to explore.
Although light green is the most common color of the Northern Lights in Iceland, be ready for a dynamic show that can reveal a variety of colors and shapes. Even if you’re not experienced with night photography, we nevertheless suggest packing a decent camera and tripod to capture this fleeting beauty. Our driver-guide will be available to help you fine-tune your camera settings so you can capture the beauty of the Northern Lights in ephemeral photographs.
In the summer months, we will enjoy the midnight sun!
