Kerlingarfjöll is a stunning mountain range located in the central highlands of Iceland, near the Kjölur highland road. It is situated in the northern part of the Hofsjökull glacier, which is the third-largest glacier in Iceland. The Kerlingarfjöll mountain range covers an area of approximately 100 km2 (39 sq mi) and reaches an elevation of 1,477 meters (4,846 ft).
Kerlingarfjöll is a tuya volcano system, which means that the mountains were formed by a volcanic eruption underneath a glacier. The mountains are composed of red volcanic rhyolite stone, which has been shaped into fascinating and unique formations by thousands of years of glacial and geothermal activity. The mountains are also home to numerous hot springs and rivulets, which add to the area’s unique character.
One of the most popular activities in Kerlingarfjöll is hiking. The area offers a range of hiking trails, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. The most popular hike is the 1.5-hour hike through the Kerlingarfjöll hot spring valley. The hike is weather dependent and may not be available in bad weather conditions. Along the way, hikers will be able to enjoy the stunning views of the rhyolite mountains and hot springs, as well as the unique colors of the ground, which have been colored by minerals emerging from the hot springs.
Another popular activity in Kerlingarfjöll is bathing in the natural hot springs of Hveravellir. The hot springs are located in the Hveravellir Nature Reserve, which is situated between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull glaciers. Hveravellir is known for its unique geological formations, including steaming fumaroles, hot springs, and mud pots. The water temperature in the hot springs is approximately 35-40°C (95-104°F), making it the perfect temperature for a relaxing soak.
In addition to hiking and bathing in the hot springs, visitors to Kerlingarfjöll can also enjoy the stunning scenery of the surrounding area. The deserted and exclusive Kjölur highland route offers visitors a chance to experience some of the most breathtaking landscapes in Iceland. The Rhyolite mountains are full of colors and steam activity, providing visitors with a unique and unforgettable experience.
Overall, Kerlingarfjöll is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Iceland. Its stunning natural beauty, unique geology, and range of activities make it the perfect destination for adventurers and nature lovers alike.
