Explore the mystical area of Lake Myvatn with us with a departure from Akureyri. We can pick up from hotels and cruise ship ports.
Our first stop of the day is a picturesque Goðafoss Waterfall. Goðafoss means Waterfall of the Gods. It is said the last Pagan leader, Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði, hurled his Pagan idols into the falls when Iceland became Christian in 1000 CE. From there, we go on an amazing journey through areas of extreme contrasts, bird life, flora, lava fields, geothermal activity, geology, and saga.
Our first stop at the Lake Mývatn area is the picturesque Skútustaðagígar Pseudo Craters, formed from explosions when the flowing hot lava met with the ice-cold water from the lake. We enjoy the great panoramic view of the area.
After that, we arrive at Dimmuborgir Lava Fields, full of lava pillars and formations that are rich in mythical sagas and ghoulish trails. Next, we drive to the warm underground river in Grjótagjá Rift, where the rift between the Eurasian & American Continents is very visible. The final stop by Lake Mývatn is at Námafjall and the geothermal area of Hverir Mud Pools, with steaming fumaroles, boiling mud pools, and sulfur pits.
In the summertime, we are able to visit the Mount Krafla volcano area and the Víti explosion crater but in winter time this visit depends on weather and road conditions.
