Embark on a Captivating Snæfellsnes Peninsula Private Tour. If you’ve already explored the Golden Circle and the South Coast or simply seek the road less traveled in Iceland, our Snæfellsnes Peninsula private tour is the perfect choice to unravel the enchanting beauty of the country’s western part.
Our journey commences with a visit to Bjarnafoss, a quaint waterfall that beckons just off the main highway. This scenic stop invites you to take a leisurely stroll, relishing the beauty and uniqueness it offers.
A short distance away lies Búðir church on the coastal side, steeped in history dating back to 1703. Renowned for its distinctive black color, the church stands as a picturesque backdrop, making it a sought-after location for wedding photography.
Entering the Snæfellsnes National Park, the westernmost part of the peninsula, opens up a realm of natural wonders. Marvel at the mystical glacier of Snæfellsjökull, explore Djúpalónssandur Black Sand Beach, stand in awe of Þufubjarg cliff, and more.
Arnarstapi fishing village awaits, featuring a sculpture of the mythological creature Bardur Snaefellsas. Renowned for its cliffs and basalt arches, Arnarstapi provides an opportunity for exploration. It also serves as our lunch stop.
Lóndrangur, towering basalt rock formations, offers breathtaking views and serves as a habitat for various nesting bird species.
Opt for an hour-long exploration beneath the surface at the Vatnshellir lava cave, revealing unique lava formations and a glimpse into the Earth’s depths. Inside the lava tube, there are two main sections. The upper section has great features and unique formations of lava statues curved on the sides of the lava tube. The lower part of the lava cave which can be reached by a long and narrow staircase takes us deep down underground to a place that was hidden from the outside world for thousands of years. Vatnshellir was created in a volcanic eruption approximately 7,000 years ago. Fun fact: It is the place where the journey to the center of the earth the science fiction by Jules Verne took place in 1864.
Djúpalónssandur black sand beach beckons with its lava rock formations, shipwreck ruins, and the famous “Lifting Stones” – a testament to the strength of fishermen.
A beautiful black sand beach where the air is filled with the sounds of birds and the Atlantic waves pounding the sands. You’ll be able to walk through the lava fields on rock steps to the ocean. You will see the rusty remains of an old shipwreck offering a stark contrast to the black sand beach. These ruins are a memorial to men lost at sea here and should be left as they are.
At the same place, you’ll also find another curiosity – four large smooth stones. These are the famous “Lifting Stones,” used for many years by the locals to test the strength of the fishermen who once lived and worked along these coasts. The biggest one is called “Fullsterkur” (Full Strength) and weighs more than 150kg (340lb). Next is “Halfsterkur” (Half Strength) at 100kg (220lb), then “Halfdraettingur” (Weakling) at 54kg (119lb), and then finally, “Amlodi” (Useless) at 23kg (50lb).
It’s believed – if a fisherman wanted to earn a spot on a fishing boat, he had to show that he could at least lift the 54kg Halfdraettingur stone – anything less was just not good enough! You’d be the shame of your village if you couldn’t even manage Amlodi!
Mount Kirkjufell or “the church mountain” in English, is perhaps the most photographed mountain in Iceland. This 463-meter mass looms over the nearby fishing village of Grunðarfjörður. Its distinct arrowhead shape has indulged both professional and amateur photographers for years. You might have seen a classic photograph of Kirkjufell mountain with the northern lights shimmering above. Probably, it even gained more attention from the world, since it featured as the Arrowhead mountain in one of the later seasons of the TV show “Game of Thrones”.The mountain was part of the scenes north of the wall’ when Jon Snow, The Hound, and Jorah Mormont seek to capture an undead wight.
