Derived from the Icelandic words ‘Rauða sandur,’ meaning red sand, the beach potentially owes its name to the distinct hue of its sands or could be tied to Ármóður the Red, an early Viking settler in the region.

Beyond its colorful sands, Rauðisandur carries tales of intrigue connected to the notorious murders at Sjöundá, a farmstead near the beach. While once home to two married couples entangled in a scandalous affair that resulted in tragic consequences, the murderous echoes of the past have long faded away.

As you amble along the shore, keep a watchful eye for seals gracefully navigating the waters, and if you peer closely, you might even catch a glimpse of whales making their presence known.

For those drawn to avian wonders, consider a visit to the nearby Látrabjarg bird cliffs, renowned for offering one of Iceland’s best puffin-watching experiences during the summer, just an hour’s drive away.

Navigating the Journey

To reach Rauðisandur on your Westfjords road trip, follow road 612 west towards Látrabjarg. Approximately 38 km (24 mi) before Látrabjarg, take a left onto route 614. Traverse this gravel road for about 11 km (7 mi), leading you to the captivating Rauðisandur. It’s crucial to opt for a 4×4 vehicle for this journey, as the road descends with steep drops and tight turns.

Upon reaching the coast, the road forks into two directions. Head east to discover the Melanes campsite or venture west to explore Saurbæjarkirkja, a quaint wooden church near Saurbær farm.
