Get ready for an unparalleled adventure with our Inside the Volcano Tour! This exclusive experience takes you deep into the heart of the dormant Þríhnúkagígur volcano, offering a breathtaking exploration opportunity only found in Iceland. If you’re an adventurer who loves exploring at your own pace, this self-drive-friendly tour is the perfect fit!
Your journey begins in Reykjavik, where we offer a convenient pick-up service. Make sure you’re ready 30 minutes before departure. If you’re staying in downtown Reykjavik, we’ll pick you up from the nearest designated pick-up point. A representative from Grayline will meet you with your booking reference and transfer you to Klettagarðar Terminal, where you’ll board a comfortable big bus that takes you directly to the Þríhnúkagígur Meeting Point.
The real adventure begins at the Þríhnúkagígur volcano, an awe-inspiring natural wonder that last erupted over 4,000 years ago. Despite its fiery past, it shows no signs of erupting again anytime soon, making it completely safe for exploration.
The name Þríhnúkagígur translates to “Three Peaks Crater,” referring to its three distinct craters, one of which you’ll be descending into. Located within the Bláfjöll Country Park, about 20 km (13 miles) southeast of Reykjavik, this volcanic marvel is one of Iceland’s most iconic geological formations.
To reach the volcano’s crater, you’ll embark on a moderate 45–50 minute hike through stunning lava fields. This scenic trail is a highlight in itself, offering uninterrupted views of Iceland’s rugged landscape. Make sure to wear sturdy hiking shoes and dress appropriately for the ever-changing Icelandic weather.
Once you reach the volcano’s main crater, you’ll step into a specially designed open cable lift, which will take you 120 meters (400 feet) down into the vast magma chamber. This descent is unlike anything else on Earth, offering a rare glimpse into the raw power of nature. The chamber is a mesmerizing cathedral of color, with shades of red, orange, yellow, and blue decorating the volcanic walls—remnants of its ancient eruptions.
