Embark on an awe-inspiring Zodiac boat tour through one of Iceland’s most magical natural wonders — the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This intimate and immersive 75-minute boat experience takes you beyond the ordinary, guiding you through iceberg-filled waters and to the very foot of a remote glacier wall. If you’re docking on Iceland’s southeast coast during your cruise, this is an unforgettable shore excursion designed to leave you breathless.
Jökulsárlón is a highlight for nature lovers, photographers, and adventurers alike. With the advantage of a small, agile Zodiac boat, you’ll explore areas of the lagoon unreachable by larger vessels and see the face of the glacier up close. Often accompanied by playful seals and surrounded by towering ice sculptures, this is Iceland at its most raw and real.
Whether you’re arriving via cruise or self-driving along the Ring Road, this zodiac tour promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience that blends glacial power, serenity, and storytelling in a spectacular natural setting.
Unlike standard amphibian boat rides that offer a broader overview, this small-group Zodiac tour is designed for true explorers who want to experience Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon in-depth. You’ll travel approximately 8 kilometers across the lagoon, navigating between shimmering icebergs and toward the ever-changing glacier wall — a distance only accessible by zodiac boats.
The tour is the longest boat experience on the lagoon, offering 75 minutes of on-water exploration, guided by expert captains who are passionate about the region’s glaciology, history, and ecology. Combined with safety-focused operations, high-quality floatation gear, and a thrilling super-truck ride to the dock, this tour is not just scenic — it’s immersive.
The experience begins at the Ice Lagoon truck, conveniently located by the main parking area on Route 1 near the lagoon, making it easy for both cruise passengers and independent travelers to access.
Please arrive at the check-in point at least 10 minutes before your scheduled departure time. Early arrivals are encouraged to check in immediately to avoid queues. You’ll be outfitted with a thermal flotation suit and a life vest. Please remove your shoes before putting on the suits to keep them in optimal condition for everyone.
What to wear: Dress warmly underneath your floatation suit according to the weather. Rain jackets, pants, gloves, a hat, and sunglasses are recommended. Bring only essentials on the boat and store any extra gear in your car or in the on-site storage.
Once you’re suited up, your adventure starts with a short but exciting ride in a custom Super-Truck-Bus — a rugged vehicle built for Iceland’s extreme conditions. This transfer takes you from the base camp to the boat dock, where a safety briefing is given before boarding the Zodiac.
Set off across the glacial lagoon and prepare to witness:
The Secluded Glacier Wall – Roughly 8 kilometers from shore, the Zodiac takes you to the face of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, a place rarely reached by most tourists. Listen to the natural sounds of ice cracking and, if you’re lucky, witness the breathtaking phenomenon of glacier calving.
Towering Icebergs – Sculpted by nature, the icebergs drift in all sizes and hues of blue and white. You’ll glide past them, sometimes close enough to admire the intricate formations or spot arctic terns resting on top.
Seal Spotting – The lagoon is home to a curious seal population. These friendly animals often swim alongside the boat or lounge lazily on floating ice.
Photo Opportunities – The small size of the boat allows you to get closer to the icebergs and glacier face than any other type of vessel. There’s ample time for personal photos and quiet moments to soak in the otherworldly landscape.

Two Zodiac boats always go out together for safety reasons, and all guides are certified and trained to operate under strict environmental guidelines. Floatation suits and life vests are provided and maintained in top condition. This tour adheres to Vatnajökull National Park regulations and follows Leave No Trace principles.
Don’t be discouraged by fog or light rain. Some of the most ethereal moments on the lagoon happen during overcast days, when reflections and mist create surreal, dreamlike scenery. The tour operates in most weather conditions — the only exception is strong wind, which may delay or cancel departures for safety.
Advance booking is highly recommended, especially during peak summer season and cruise ship arrival days. Zodiac tours have very limited capacity and sell out quickly due to high demand and small group sizes.
