🌋 12 Eruptions Since 2021 | 🚁 Helicopter, Hiking & Super Jeep Options | ⏱️ 20 min read | 📅 Updated: November 2025
Iceland sits on one of the most volcanically active regions on Earth, and since 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula has awakened after 800 years of silence. With 12 eruptions in just four years, visitors now have unprecedented opportunities to witness the raw power of volcanic creation through helicopter flights, guided hikes, super jeep adventures, and even descending inside a dormant volcano’s magma chamber.
Whether you’re hoping to see glowing lava (during active eruptions) or explore the dramatic, still-warm landscapes left behind, volcano tours in Iceland offer some of the most memorable experiences available anywhere in the world. This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about visiting Iceland’s volcanoes in 2025.
As of November 2025, there is no active eruption in Iceland. The most recent eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula began on July 16, 2025, and ended on August 5, 2025. This was the 9th eruption in the Sundhnúkur crater row series and the 12th on the peninsula since volcanic activity resumed in 2021.
Scientists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office continue to monitor the area closely. Approximately 15 million cubic meters of magma have accumulated since the July 2025 eruption, and experts consider it likely that another eruption will occur along the Sundhnúkur crater row in the coming months.
For the most spectacular views of Iceland’s volcanic landscapes, nothing compares to a helicopter tour over the eruption sites. These 60-minute aerial adventures take you soaring above the Reykjanes Peninsula, where you’ll witness the dramatic aftermath of recent eruptions from a perspective few will ever experience.
Your helicopter journey covers the volcanic highlights of the Reykjanes Peninsula:

For those who want to experience Iceland’s volcanic power up close, guided hiking tours take you across the fresh lava fields of the Reykjanes Peninsula. Walk where molten rock flowed just months or years ago, feel the warmth still radiating from the earth in places, and learn about volcanic geology from expert local guides.
Several hiking trails access the recent eruption sites on the Reykjanes Peninsula:

Not everyone can or wants to hike for hours to reach the volcano sites. Our Volcano Shuttle Superjeep Tour offers the perfect solution – ride in a specially modified 4×4 vehicle directly to viewing points overlooking Iceland’s youngest volcanic landscapes.
Imagine descending 120 meters into the heart of a dormant volcano, standing where molten magma once churned. The Inside the Volcano tour at Thrihnukagigur is the only place on Earth where this is possible, making it one of Iceland’s most extraordinary experiences.
Thrihnukagigur volcano last erupted 4,000 years ago. Today, you can ride an elevator into its colorful magma chamber – an experience available nowhere else in the world.
Your journey begins with a 45-50 minute hike (about 3.5 km) across a volcanic landscape to the volcano entrance. At the top, you’ll be fitted with safety gear before boarding a specially designed elevator that lowers you 120 meters into the magma chamber.
Inside, you’re surrounded by the stunning colors of the volcanic rock walls – reds, oranges, yellows, and purples created by different minerals. Natural light from above illuminates the vast chamber, which is large enough to fit the Statue of Liberty. It’s a surreal, almost otherworldly experience.
